Linguistic issues in the Riga’s Polish weekly newspaper “Nasze Życie”

The present article analyzes a sample of texts on the status of the Polish language in Latvia that appeared in Nasze Życie (Our Life), a weekly published in Riga between 1934 and 1940. The analysis sug-gests that the editorial team of Nasze Życieconsidered linguistic cor-rectness and accuracy as one of the highest values of their periodical. This is evidenced by a large number of articles which emphasized the role of high-standard Polish language in preserving the Polish national identity. Much space was dedicated to the problem of linguistic cor-rectness, as well as linguistic variations, in particular the Latvian Polish subdialect. The newspaper also published reader letters, which usually contained reader opinions on particular articles previously published in the periodical.
